Enrolment options

This module develops conflict recognition, risk assessment, de-escalation, negotiation and mediation in high-stress correctional settings. It is intended for professionals operating within the correctional ecosystem and community-based reintegration services, and combines asynchronous Moodle learning, face-to-face practice activities and transnational online exchange.

Learning outcomes

After completing the module you will be able to:

  • Identify behavioural, verbal and environmental indicators of emerging conflict in custodial settings through structured observation (LO1, EQF 5 (Basic))
  • Analyse conflict situations to determine escalation risk and select response pathways in custodial settings (LO2, EQF 5 (Basic))
  • Implement de-escalation and communication techniques during simulated conflict scenarios involving people in detention and staff (LO3, EQF 5 (Basic))
  • Evaluate intervention options and select proportional responses during conflict situations, while demonstrating emotional self-regulation as a professional attitude (LO4, EQF 6 (Advanced))
  • Design mediation or negotiation approaches for complex conflicts involving people in detention, staff teams and external actors such as families or visitors (LO5, EQF 6 (Advanced))

Structure and workload

The module follows nine chapters, from the module overview to further resources. Total module hours: 10 hours – 4 hours face-to-face in your local CoVE (national language), 3 hours online synchronous with trainers (English) and 3 hours asynchronous learning on Moodle.

Assessment

Competency-based assessment (Chapter 7): Task 1 – case analysis and escalation mapping report (20%); Task 2 – de-escalation and boundary management simulation (25%); Component 1 – active participation and professional attitude (20%); Task 3 – final conflict response and mediation proposal (35%). Every learning outcome must reach at least level 3 (Competent) and the overall average must be at least 3.0. A knowledge test in Chapter 8 supports your self-assessment.
