The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 goals established by the United Nations in 2015, aimed at addressing the world's major challenges by 2030. These goals are broad and interconnected, each with its own targets and actions. They are designed to create a better future by tackling critical issues such as poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice. The idea is that no goal should be met at the expense of another, emphasizing a balanced approach that considers economic, social, and environmental sustainability.

SDG Selected: SDG 4 - Quality Education

Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) is focused on ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all. It's one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The overarching aim of SDG 4 is to reduce disparities and ensure access to quality education at all levels – from early childhood education to tertiary and vocational training.

Education is foundational to the development of individuals and societies. It enhances people’s understanding of themselves and the world around them, and is crucial for the eradication of poverty and fostering economic growth. However, achieving these targets presents significant challenges, particularly in low-income countries affected by conflicts, high population growth, inequality, and poor infrastructure. The COVID-19 pandemic has also posed new challenges and exacerbated existing disparities in access to education.

SDG 4 emphasizes not just access to education but also the quality and inclusiveness of education. This goal acknowledges the role of education in achieving other SDGs by fostering innovation and resilience, reducing inequalities, and laying the groundwork for sustainable development.

Indicator: Adult participation in learning
