This module strengthens the capacity of professionals working in correctional settings to apply dynamic security as a preventive, relational and adaptive approach to maintaining safety and order. It responds to contemporary challenges such as staffing pressures, capacity pressure, reduced continuity in relationships and increased operational demands.

Learning outcomes

After completing the module you will be able to:

  • Analyse how workforce, capacity pressure and reduced continuity affect preventive and relational security in custodial settings.
  • Apply dynamic security principles to prioritise preventive actions when staff presence, time and relational continuity are limited.
  • Identify early signs of risk, escalation or relational breakdown during daily interaction with people deprived of liberty.
  • Evaluate situation-based trade-offs between presence, dialogue, procedural control and static security measures while maintaining legitimacy.
  • Plan a coordinated team response that supports preventive practice, relational continuity and emotional resilience during sustained operational pressure.

Structure and workload

The course follows the nine chapters of Module 9: module overview, language and context note, knowledge foundation, skill in practice, professional attitudes and values, case study and scenario (including two virtual simulations), assessment tasks, reflection and self-assessment, and further resources.

Total learning time: 10 hours – face-to-face learning 4 hours, online synchronous learning 2 hours and asynchronous learning on Moodle 4 hours. Complete the Moodle preparation materials before the face-to-face workshops and online synchronous discussions.

Assessment

Learning is assessed through self-assessment questions, interactive H5P activities, scenario-based exercises, case study analysis, security trade-off exercises, four assessment tasks and a reflective journal. Each of the five learning outcomes carries 20 % of the module score. One micro-credential is issued per module, based on demonstrated learning outcomes.
